Parai & Silambam
Traditional Tamil classical arts
MNTS introduced its community to two ancient Tamil classical art forms — Parai and Silambam — through demonstrations, open-house performances, and workshops. These traditions are an integral part of Tamil cultural heritage.
Parai (பறை) is one of the oldest percussion instruments in Tamil culture. The Parai drum has deep roots in Tamil folk music, ritual ceremonies, and community celebrations. Its powerful sound and rhythmic complexity have made it a symbol of Tamil cultural identity and resilience.
Silambam (சிலம்பம்) is a classical Tamil martial art originating in ancient Tamil Nadu. Practiced with a long bamboo staff, Silambam combines agility, speed, and disciplined footwork. It is one of the oldest surviving martial arts in the world and is recognised by the Tamil Nadu government as a classical art form.
